Ce livre est le premier volume de témoignages de Margarete Buber-Neumann. Née en 1901 à Postdam, elle fut la compagne de Heinz Neumann, l'un des leaders du parti communiste allemand dans les années 20.
A Moscou, où ils se sont réfugiés pour fuir le nazisme, Heinz est arrêté et porté disparu, et Margarete envoyée en Sibérie. C’est à cette période des camps sibériens que s’attache ce premier volume, à la fin duquel, en 1940, elle sera livrée à la Gestapo par Staline. Elle sera alors internée au camp de Ravensbrück où elle survivra jusqu'en avril 1945. …
