Mike Cooper fashions a heartfelt ode to the much missed Lol Coxhill here, enlisting a raft of soprano sax players to pay their respects to the free-improv great's overwhelming influence.

Gianluigi Trovesi born in Nembro (Bergamo), on January 1st, 1944. His father, a drum amateur and a metallurgical worker, teaches him to play drums – when he is 15 years old he starts studying and playing clarinetto, so to enter the Nembro Band. When he is 16, he enters the Musical School of Bergamo to better and more seriously study of clarinetto.

Pharoah Sanders' third Impulse! album, 1969's Karma, is a milestone of the Spiritual Jazz movement and a natural progression in the sonic exploration that Sanders, along with John and Alice Coltrane, had spearheaded over the previous five years. "The Creator Has a Master Plan" is as close as Spiritual Jazz comes to having its own anthem. After a string of two dozen brilliant albums beginning in the 1950's, clarinetist, saxophonist, flutist, composer and arranger Jimmy Giuffre stopped recording - For nearly ten years he focused solely on live performance - This album, Music for People, Birds, Butterflies and Mosquitoes, marked his return to the studio after his self imposed hiatus. Known for developing forms of jazz which allowed for free interplay between the musicians, Giuffre began his career as an arranger for Woody Herman's big band in the late 1940s. Playing primarily saxophone, he became a central figure in the West Coast cool jazz scene of the 1950's, with the Lighthouse All Stars in Hermosa Beach, CA. In the late 50's, he began working within different configurations of the trio format, on what he called "blues-based folk jazz." A prime example being his piece "The Train and the River" famously featured in 1958 Newport Jazz Festival concert film, Jazz On A Summer's Day.

For more than thirty years, the group has carried the American tradition of percussive jazz onward from a distinctly African-Chicago-American perspective. Founded in 1973 by percussionist Kahil El'Zabar, this, their second album and first for Red Records (1982), is a much sought-after LP by collectors, with second-hand copies changing hands at incredibly high prices.

Sakina Abdou has expressed herself in many contexts, in musical fields both broad and eclectic. With this solo album, she invites herself within, focus and anchors herself for the first time in her own language, where she summons the many influences which have nurtured her. Through «homemade» recording, naked, raw, without effects or tricks, we meet her on her own, at home. Grab a chair or settle on the floor next to her, on the edge of the bell, almost touching, and find yourself captured in a sound recording quite close, almost macroscopic.

With this new release, the long-standing trio looks back on four album productions and nearly 13 years of performing together as a band under the direction of leader and saxophonist Peter Van Huffel, during which time they developed a unique sound and their distinctively wild and energetic approach to music. “Mind Raid” is however the first album created completely collaboratively by the band.

In addition to our Sephardic roots, the album also includes pieces from the Carpathian Basin. We play, among others, a Sephardic lament, a Schoenberg quotation and a Mahala (Romanian, Hungarian and Gypsy dance). The themes try to draw out - despite their diversity - a structural building system in which the individual parts show a very different face at the micro and macro level."

The ninth album in BBE Music's J Jazz Masterclass Series presents ‘At the Room 427’ by Koichi Matsukaze Trio Featuring Ryojiro Furusawa, a rarely heard exemplar of post-modal power bop and free jazz.

"Together, Brötzmann and Lonberg-Holm have released two excellent prior duos … This latest CD, Memories of a Tunicate, may be the jewel in their crown. Credit is due to Lonberg-Holm's liberal use of electronics. Against Brötzmann's muscular saxophone, the cellist can bring a saturating wall of sound to parry that machine gun attack. This music is, though, not a face-off but a flow."

Dreamlike experiences. Sparks fly and a musical interaction works without arrangement or plan. An organic musical process develops out of intuition alone. The same magic happens every time.
