If one examines the musical career of Ritchie Blackmore, you will travel a varied, busy, intricate course through many genres within the "the music business".

The beginning of the sixties to 1968: played live and in the studio with The Outlaws, Screaming Lord Sutch's Savages, Neil Christian, Houston Wells and a few more. Served in the backing bands of people such as Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis and Tom Jones. Became a veteran (still only a teenager!) of the infamous Hamburg scene, hotbed of most acts we know today as "classic rock". Played on an estimated 400 sides (there used to be a thing called a single vinyl record and it had one song per side, hence the appellation) as a sought after session musician.

1968 to Spring 1975: formed Deep Purple, going through three different lineups of said band, also found time to form a power trio with Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott and Ian Paice, Baby Face. Nine studio albums.

1975 to Spring 1984: recorded a solo single but that turned into the band Rainbow, almost twenty musicians were to go through its ranks, on seven studio albums.

April 1984 to November 1993: reformed Deep Purple - only two line-ups this time, spread over four studio albums.

1994 to 1997: a new incarnation of Rainbow performed world wide with their release of "Stranger In Us All".

And from 1997-2015, on to the Renaissance Rock of Blackmore's Night, a band that has recorded 10 studio albums and several dvds.

Don't know about you, but I get exhausted just reading about it. Imagine doing it all, being at the helm and also, more often than not, being the heart and soul and the driving force for most of that timeline. You'd have to be one hell of a guitarist, and a man of unlimited creativity, vision and determination.

In short, you would have to be Ritchie Blackmore.

In Blackmore's case, it's never been about lifestyle or girlfriends or politics or rock star excess - it's always been solely about music. And yet Ritchie Blackmore's career, now going through its sixth decade, has had its fair share of soap opera content too, as you are about to discover watching the man himself guiding you through this fascinating film.

The story begins in April, 1945, and takes us through Ritchie's early years to the present day. It is illustrated throughout with rare and unseen photographic and video material showcasing many of the man's landmark musical moments with Deep Purple, Rainbow and Blackmore's Night. There is material from the very early days of Purple, to the making of "Smoke on the Water", to historic clips of "Made in Japan" and California Jam, to the rise, fall and rebirth of Rainbow, to countless line-up changes, splits and reformations. From the early sixties, when the teenage Blackmore made a name for himself as the fastest, yet most meticulous session Stratocaster player, to the acoustic guitar, hurdy gurdy playing minstrel of today adding these instruments to his repertoire, yet still incorporating his performance and brilliance on the electric guitar, his talent, unconventionality and brilliance have always been the determining factors. Testament to that is given amply all through this film by members of Queen, Kiss, Def Leppard, Metallica, Jethro Tull etc., guitar legends (and Blackmore acolytes) such as Joe Satriani, Steve Lukather, and Steve Vai, as well as current and former members of Rainbow and Deep Purple and well-known rock journalists and biographers.
The amount of respect and admiration Ritchie garners from his peers and associates is amazing. Here is a guitar player, musician, composer and band leader in a class of his own, a "Caucasian Hendrix", as David Coverdale so eloquently puts it. Yet time and time again Blackmore refuses to shine the light on himself and lets the music do the talking, hence the "mystery man" and "moody guitar hero" of popular perception.
