Jazz trifft auf Elektronik trifft auf Folklore – das Frankfurter Contrast Trio hat ein intensives, tanzbares, und melancholisches Werk geschaffen. Auf „Letila Zozulya" (ausgesprochen „Sosulja") findet sich zum ersten Mal auch Gesang. Für sein drittes Album reiste das Piano-Trio nach Kiew, um dort mit einem ukrainischem Chor aufzunehmen. Die Band, die als jüngster Preisträger in der Geschichte 2016 den Hessischen Jazzpreis bekam, hat in zehn Tagen Eigenproduktion ein Album kreiert, das trotz unterschiedlichster Einflüsse ein homogenes, perfekt durchhörbares Werk geworden ist.

Die Geschichte dieses Albums ist auch die Geschichte eines Road Trips. Im Juni 2017 fuhren Yuriy Sych, Tim Roth und Martin Standke nach Kiew. Der Keyboarder, der Bassist und der Drummer, unterwegs in die Heimat von Yuriy. 2003 war der Pianist aus der Ukraine zum klassischen Klavierstudium nach Frankfurt gezogen. Nun also zurück nach Osten, drei Tage unterwegs Richtung EU-Außengrenze, den Van bis unters Dach vollgepackt mit Synthesizern. Nach Konzerten in Krakau und Lemberg, und stundenlanger Wartezeit an der Grenze, kam das Contrast Trio schließlich in den Kiewer Dowschenko Studios an – einer riesigen Filmfabrik, die 1927 in der damaligen Sowjetunion entstand. Wo früher das Orchester untergebracht war und die Musik zu Stummfilmen einspielte, (u.a. den Soundtrack zu „Man with a Movie Camera") positionierten die drei ihre Mikrofone, ihre Instrumente und sehr viel Elektronik. Fast zwei Wochen lang schloss man sich (mit Gast-Perkussionist Florian Dreßler) in den Studios ein, nahm mit lokalen Musikern auf und spielte zwischendurch Konzerte. „Eine solche Aufgeschlossenheit gegenüber unserer Musik haben wir sonst nirgendwo erlebt", sagt Bassist Tim Roth. „Es ist eher ungewöhnlich, dass westliche Bands in die Ukraine kommen. Standing Ovations nach jedem Stück sind dort ganz normal."
