Returning to action after a nine-year absence, John Anderson set up shop on his own Bayou Boys Music label and settled in to do what he does best: pure country. He was aided in his comeback by Merle Haggard, who penned "Magic Mama" specifically for Anderson while holed up in a hospital recovering from pneumonia, and it provides a nice touchstone for the rest of Goldmine. With its West Coast Western swing, it's proudly part of tradition but Hag's lyrics are nimble and funny, the perfect match for Anderson's voice, a nimble, supple instrument. One of Anderson's great gifts is how he feels inherently worn-in and laid-back but he's never lazy; whether on a ballad or a honky tonk tune, he never follows conventional beats, his ease disguising his idiosyncratic phrasing.

If you only know John Anderson from his 1983 novelty crossover hit "Swingin'," you're missing out: In the '80s and early '90s, he was real-deal country, with a backwoods Florida twang and a completely unique delivery—you could never predict if his timbre was going to swoop or take flight. Anderson fell off radio playlists but has remained a favorite of other artists, and an impressive roster of them has lined up for a tribute album produced by The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach for his Easy Eye Sound label.

Neo-honky tonker John Anderson was born in Apopka, Florida, in 1955 and grew up listening to rock & roll, until he discovered country music at age 15 through Merle Haggard. He moved to Nashville in the early '70s, showing up at his sister's house with no warning, and worked a variety of odd jobs (including one as a roofer for the Grand Ole Opry) while playing clubs at night. Eventually, all the hard work paid off with a contract for Warner Bros., and Anderson released his first single in 1978. His self-titled debut album appeared in 1980 and helped signal the rise of the new traditionalist movement, drawing critical praise as well.
