Andres Segovia - The Segovia Collection (Volume 1): The Legendary Andres Segovia in an All-Bach Program (1987)

Anyone who was enchanted by Yo Yo Ma's recent video compilation of Bach's cello suites and who has an ear for guitar will also find something special here. Segovia brings a reverence and timelesness to these works, all of them ineffable masterpieces. While recording techniques and outright virtuosity have continued to develop since these recordings (Williams in the Lute Suites, Bream/Barrueco in the Chaconne, Sollscher/Galbraith and others in the Cello Suites) the sense of discovery and sheer love of beauty shine through as strongly as ever. These recordings will be around for a long time to come, but jump right in and be enchanted by as accurate and unwavering an account of these works as you ever thought possible.
Not to knock the many violinists who have done soulful powerful renditions of the 2nd Violin Partita, but Segovia's transcription of Chaconne is simply phenomonal! This CD is particularly moving for guitarists. - Amazon Reviewers

Steve Martland - Patrol (1994)

This is different stuff…but I like it a lot. In fact, I like Steve Martland's music more than Phillip Glass. Phillip Glass was great for a start but once he became famous, all the songs sound the same. At least with Steve Martland the music is always different. The 1st section called "Danceworks" is simple Classical music with a rock beat, very jumpy & danceable, almost comical at times. The highlight is "Patrol", this is what many normally think as Classical music. This piece is the most haunting, loneliest piece of music I ever heard. At times the music seems like Arvo Part with its starkness, specially with the violins, yet Steve Martland holds onto his originality. Let me write it this way; if you want something different & feel very depress, either play "Danceworks" to left your spirits or if you want to remain depressed play "Patrol" to explore the uniqueness & mystery of your soul. - Amazon Reviewer

Kyung Wha Chung - Max Bruch -Violin Concerto No. 1, Scottish Fantasy (1999)

Chung's recording of two beloved Bruch (pieces) is filled with fervent youthful energy and at the same time fragile delicacy. Chung's ability to express the powerful energy not forgetting the detail always amazes me. Simply, the two Bruch recrdings are such a beauty that no word can describe.
One of the best classical cds!
Kyung Wha Chung does a wonderful job of expressing the small details of Max Bruch… All the energy is expressed, just as Bruch intended it to. A must have for all classical collections.- Amazon Reviewer

Chet Baker - Too Cool (2007)

Chet Baker with a matinee idol's striking looks and an understated vocal and instrumental delivery that left space for one's romantic imagination to roam, trumpeter Chet Baker came to epitomize West Coast jazz. These lyrical 1950s recordings capture the star-crossed, cool jazz icon at his artistic peak.

The Weavers - Greatest Hits (1971, 1986)

The Weaver's "Greatest Hits" CD lives up to its name, and presents the most memorable songs by one of America's most important and enjoyable folk bands. The CD is two albums in one, and part of Vanguard's "Twofer" series. The first 13 songs are live, and most of the remaining ones are studio (the order of the songs on the CD is completely different than that listed above). The Weavers' musical style varies greatly including American folk, blues, ethnic folk, and pop orchestration. They sound best - and most timeless – in recordings with minimal studio production and no background musicians. It is this unique sound that inspired Peter, Paul and Mary, and this also comes out more strongly in their live recordings. The sound quality of this CD is nice and crisp. - Amazon Reviewer

Chucho Valdes & His Combo - The Complete 64 Sessions (2007)

Approximately 78 min. Digitally remastered. One of the finest musicians of his era ,Cuban Valdes shows on this disc why his music is now being released all over the world. The two albums on this disc were originally recorded in the mid-sixties. The group consists of Paquito D'Rivera on alto sax and clarinet plus a couple of other horns and a rhythm section plus percussion. The music is obviously Cuban in nature but has a definite western feel on some of the arrangements. Like a lot of Cuban music this is light-hearted jazz, nothing heavy or deep. It is some of the best jazz of it's kind you will ever hear. - Stuart Jefferson
