The Encyclopedia of Super Villains
Jeff Rovin | Facts On File | CBR | ISBN: 081601356X | October 1987 | 416 Pages | 248.94 MB

This lavishly illustrated companion to Rovin's The Encyclopedia of Superheroes (1985) contains short articles on almost 1000 villainous characters culled from movies, TV, mythology, fiction, and other sources. The majority of those featured are outlandish characters from comic books. Villains from genre fiction such as mysteries, science fiction, or romances are almost nonexistent, as are the classic villains of literature, folklore, and mainstream movies. Most of the selected villains apparently were included because of their noteworthy nastiness and the audacity of their criminal intentions. This is a well-researched, well-written, amply illustrated dictionary for an area where there are few reliable reference sources. --

The Encyclopedia of Super Heroes

The Encyclopedia of Super Heroes
Jeff Rovin | Facts On File | CBR | ISBN: 0816011680 | October 1985 | 464 Pages | 195.24 MB

This book covers more than just the obvious comic book heroes like Superman, Captain America, Batman and Captain Marvel. It also includes the biblical hero Samson and the western hero the Lone Ranger and listings of obscure and one-shot heroes like Hell-Rider and the Copperhead. Because of its early 80s publication date, the book doesn't cover the more modern heroes, like those found in Image or Valiant comics. But as a whole it may still be the most useful resource on superheroes thereabouts. Information includes costume descriptions, first appearances, short biographies and an extremely interesting "comments" section. Very useful for tracking down info on old Golden Age characters that are now long gone. A very useful and excellent reference tool.
