The Revolution in Geology from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment

Gary D. Rosenberg, "The Revolution in Geology from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment"
Geological Society of America | 2010 | ISBN: 0813712033 | 283 pages | PDF | 10 MB

Rosenberg (earth sciences, Indiana U.-Purdue U., Indianapolis) presents a collection of 20 papers which evolved from a session Rosenberg organized as part of the 2006 national convention of the Geological Society of America in Philadelphia, focusing on the founder of modern geological thought, Nicholas Steno. The collection combines papers from the 2006 conference with additional essays solicited by the editor. A sampling of topics: the measure of man and landscape in the Renaissance and Scientific Revolution, geochemical concepts in Isaac Newton's early alchemy, signs and symbols in Kircher's Mundus Subterraneus, Steno and the problem of deep time, the Scientific Revolution and Steno's twofold conversion, Benjamin Franklin and geology, Charles S. Pierce and the "Light of Nature", and natural theology, design and law.
