The Eastern Front: Armor Camouflage & Markings, 1941-1945 (Specials 6102) By Steven J. Zaloga, James Grandsen
Publisher: Squadron/Signal Publications 1983 | 96 Pages | ISBN: 0897471423 | PDF | 33 MB

This book, old as it is (1983), has a wealth of visual info about its topic. The 56 color illustrations are beautiful (if one can call intruments of death "beautiful") and well captioned. It has photos and drawings of very colorful Soviet schemes that I have never seen before, even in the few Russian and Polish-published books that I own. Particularly, one of a winter SU-122 with pretty green branches painted, a tiny red star on each side and the gun, and a huge red circle on top. There is also a drawing of a 1945 German Hetzer painted in the pre-war Czech colors from the Czech factory stocks. Many, many rare specimens, indeed. Included are images of captured vehicles: a German and a Finnish T-34, Polish Home Army Panther, etc. Also diverse camouflage schemes even for the lesser Axis and Allied belligerents, like Hungary and Finland. Very little appears on Italy, as it used almost no armor in the east. Tactical symbols and patriotic slogans are well explored and documented through photos and text, and a chart in included with the symbols for: 50 German Panzer Divisions 13 German SS Panzer Divisions 46 German StuG units 18 German Panzergrenadier Divisions 11 German Schwere Panzer Abteilungen 65 Soviet unit insignias 27 Czechoslovak, Finnish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Slovak, and Hungarian insignias
