The TBF/TBM Avenger was among the class of modern combat aircraft designed and built for the US Navy in the early 1940s. It was the most prolific torpedo bomber of World War II. with a total of 9.839 built by Grumman and General Motors between 1940 and 1945. The Avenger served with the US Navy. US Marines. Britain's Royal Navy, and the Royal New Zealand Air Force during the war. This aircraft wasn't just prolific: it was pre-eminent. The Avenger grew out of a 1939 US Navy Bureau of Aeronautics (BuAer) specification, which called for a new torpedo bomber capable of 300 mph (482.8 kmh>. This also called for internal carriage of three 500 pound (226.8 kg) bombs or one torpedo and a 3000 mile (4827.9 km) scouting range with a bomb bay-mounted auxiliary fuel tank. Defensive armament was specified as a pair of forward-firing machine guns, a power turret, and hand-held ventral guns.
