Modern Biotechnology: Defining and Solving Human Problems will introduce biotechnology as an applied field with the aim of defining and solving human problemsnamely those in the realms of disease, energy, food, and environment. Using these modern wicked problems as a conceptual framework, traditional and emerging biotechnological tools will be explored. In doing so, the applied and interdisciplinary nature of the field will be evident. This title will serve as a stand-alone overview of the field in addition to providing implicit connections to the more in-depth and topically focused books to follow in the series. In-set boxes will be included throughout the book that will offer opportunities for the reader to practice foundational skills and relate to real-world vignettes. Undergraduate education: Traditional life science courses make up the vast majority of the foundational curriculum within biotechnology degree programs. This is a problem if students are expected to integrate and apply the basic biology, chemistry, computation, and social science principles on their own or in their final years of study. The proposed book will meet a need of providing an introduction to biotechnology in a way that fosters application and interdisciplinarity. Thus, readers will come away with an authentic appeciation for this unique field.
