What do you know about Canada?

Canada has a long and interesting history, yet many know very little about it. Canada’s human history dates back some fifteen thousand years to the Ice Age when ancient human explorers traveled across a land bridge from Eurasia and made their way to the continent of North America. These First Nations peoples would craft their own unique civilizations all over the continent, with some of the richest and most complex societies taking root in the region of modern-day Canada.

In fact, by the time the French arrived on the scene in the 1500s they were soon made aware of the powerful Iroquois Confederacy that spanned a huge swathe of the Canadian soil. The French would come to build vibrant settlements of their own in the meantime, and they would come to ally themselves with various local tribes as they built up a profitable fur trade. The French government would ultimately be run out by their British rivals, although the French settlers of large chunks of Canada, such as Quebec, would remain under British rule.

Canadians of all stripes would continue on over the next few centuries, and they gradually obtained independence from the British. Unlike the Americans who forcefully rebelled against British rule, Canada’s independence would be a gradual one, and it was not truly completed until 1982. Even now, the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, still has some ceremonial influence over this member of the British Commonwealth.

This, of course, is just the briefest of summaries of Canada’s evolution—keep reading to discover the rich and intriguing history of Canada in full!
