Hardly any biblical scholar can be unaware that the issue of the 'United Monarchy' has come under scrutiny. The question of Israelite origins, of course, has dominated much of the twentieth century, but has focused in recent years on the emergence of new settlement patterns in the central highlands during Iron I (conventionally 1250-1050 BCE) and on whether, or to what extent, or at what point in the development of this society the term 'Israel' is appropriate. The debate is as much concerned with conceptual and methodological issues as with substantive conclusions.Although debate has been proceeding for several years, it has now erupted into a fairly heated confrontation, fuelled by the discovery of an inscription at Tel Dan which is alleged by some to refer to a king of the
'house of David', a claim which others dispute. (That inscription, and the controversy it has engendered, will form the topic of a forthcoming volume in the JSOT Supplement Series.)
