The Four Faces of Nuclear Terrorism is the result of a two-year study by the Monterey Institute's Center for Nonproliferation Studies of the motivations and capabilities of terrorist organizations to carry out devastating attacks using stolen nuclear weapons, to construct and detonate crude nuclear weapons known as improvised nuclear devices (INDs), to release radiation by attacking or sabotaging nuclear facilities, and to build and use radiological weapons or "dirty bombs." These "four faces" of nuclear terrorism are real threats that current U.S. policy fails to take into account. Because Washington has no guidelines for directing scarce resources to where they would have the greatest impact, this book merits the earnest attention of policy makers and the public. Although various Luftwaffe campaigns are discussed in this book, I limit my review to the German blitzkrieg against Poland in 1939. This review is based on the original (1968) edition. What has found its way into innumerable books and encyclopedias is a canard. Bekker comments: "Despite all assertions to the contrary, the Polish Air Force was not destroyed on the ground in the first two days of fighting. The bomber brigade in particular continued to make determined attacks on the German forces up to September 16th. However, the Polish aircraft, inferior both in numbers and in design, could hardly contest the supremacy of the Luftwaffe in the air." (p. 59).

This excellent book by Mednis has only one flaw: it is not long enough! This is really a repertoire book for white, but without covering all openings. He focuses on lines where quick resolution is brought about, so that a complex middlegame is avoided. For instance, against the King's Indian, he recommends an early dxe5, followed by the exchange of queens and Bg5, Nd5, etc. Similarly, Mednis recommends the Spanish Exchange. Other openings covered are: the Sicilian Dragon and Accelerated Dragon, the Pirc, the Modern, Queen's Indian, Grunfeld, English/Reti, and the French. Each chapter contains heavy verbal annotations of the main recommended lines, making this a phenomenal instructive manual on both the opening and the endgame. Lt Col Eschmann's military experience and first hand view of these times give him worthy credibility. I strongly recommend to anyone wanting to know more on this historical subject concerning our conflict in Vietnam.
