This textbook provides a coherent, integrated look at various topics from undergraduate analysis. It begins with Fourier series, continues with Hilbert spaces, discusses the Fourier transform on the real line, and then turns to the heart of the book, geometric considerations. This chapter includes complex differential forms, geometric inequalities from one and several complex variables, and includes some of the author's original results. The concept of orthogonality weaves the material into a coherent whole. The goal of this work is to present the principles of functional analysis in a clear and concise way. The first three chapters of Functional Analysis: Fundamentals and Applications describe the general notions of distance, integral and norm, as well as their relations. The three chapters that follow deal with fundamental examples: Lebesgue spaces, dual spaces and Sobolev spaces. Two subsequent chapters develop applications to capacity theory and elliptic problems. In particular, the isoperimetric inequality and the Pólya-Szegő and Faber-Krahn inequalities are proved by purely functional methods. The epilogue contains a sketch of the history of functional analysis, in relation with integration and differentiation. Starting from elementary analysis and introducing relevant recent research, this work is an excellent resource for students in mathematics and applied mathematics.

This textbook presents a unified approach to compact and noncompact Riemann surfaces from the point of view of the so-called L2 $\bar{\delta}$-method. This method is a powerful technique from the theory of several complex variables, and provides for a unique approach to the fundamentally different characteristics of compact and noncompact Riemann surfaces.

Basic Algebra and Advanced Algebra systematically develop concepts and tools in algebra that are vital to every mathematician, whether pure or applied, aspiring or established. Advanced Algebra includes chapters on modern algebra which treat various topics in commutative and noncommutative algebra and provide introductions to the theory of associative algebras, homological algebras, algebraic number theory, and algebraic geometry. Together the two books give the reader a global view of algebra, its role in mathematics as a whole and are suitable as texts in a two-semester advanced undergraduate or first-year graduate sequence in algebra.

This is a revised and extended version of my 1995 elementary introduction to partial di?erential equations. The material is essentially the same except for three new chapters. The ?rst (Chapter 8) is about non-linear equations of ?rst order and in particular Hamilton–Jacobi equations. It builds on the continuing idea that PDEs, although a branch of mathematical analysis, are closely related to models of physical phenomena. Such underlying physics in turn provides ideas of solvability. The Hopf variational approach to the Cauchy problem for Hamilton–Jacobi equations is one of the clearest and most incisive examples of such an interplay. The method is a perfect blend of classical mechanics, through the role and properties of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian, and calculus of variations. A delicate issue is that of identifying “uniqueness classes. ” An e?ort has been made to extract the geometrical conditions on the graph of solutions, such as quasi-concavity, for uniqueness to hold. Chapter 9 is an introduction to weak formulations, Sobolev spaces, and direct variationalmethods for linear and quasi-linearelliptic equations. While terse, the material on Sobolev spaces is reasonably complete, at least for a PDEuser. Itincludesallthebasicembeddingtheorems,includingtheirproofs, and the theory of traces. Weak formulations of the Dirichlet and Neumann problems build on this material. Related variational and Galerkin methods, as well as eigenvalue problems, are presented within their weak framework.

Classical mechanics is a chief example of the scientific method organizing a "complex" collection of information into theoretically rigorous, unifying principles; in this sense, mechanics represents one of the highest forms of mathematical modeling. This textbook covers standard topics of a mechanics course, namely, the mechanics of rigid bodies, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalism, stability and small oscillations, an introduction to celestial mechanics, and Hamilton–Jacobi theory, but at the same time features unique examples—such as the spinning top including friction and gyroscopic compass—seldom appearing in this context. The polar regions, perhaps more than any other places on Earth, give the geophysical scientist a sense of exploration. This sensibility is genuine, for not only is high-latitude ?eldwork arduous with many locations seldom or never visited, but there remains much fundamental knowledge yet to be discovered about how the polar regions interact with the global climate system. The range of opportunities for new discovery becomes strikingly clear when we realize that the high latitudes are not one region but are really two vastly di?erent worlds. The high Arctic is a frozen ocean surrounded by land, and is home to fragile ecosystems and unique modes of human habitation. The Antarctic is a frozen continent without regular human habitation, covered by ice sheets taller than many mountain ranges and surrounded by the Earth’s most forbidding ocean. When we consider global change as applied to the Arctic, we discuss impacts to a region whose surface and lower atmospheric temperatures are near the triple point of water throughout much of the year. The most consistent signatures of climate warming have occurred at northern high latitudes (IPCC, 2001), and the potential impacts of a few degrees increase in surface temperature include a reduction in sea ice extent, a positive feedback to climate warming due to lowering of surface albedo, and changes to surface runo? that might a?ect the Arctic Ocean’s salinity and circulation.
