This book was spawned by loss and tragedy, but it ismy hope that it will bring inspiration and optimism. WhenMichael Sorkin – the inimitable urbanist, theorist and ar chitecture critic – died of COVID­19 on 26 March 2020,
a groundswell of memories and commiserations filledsocial­media feeds, websites and design journals. It was
