Haar, James, American musicologist; b. St. Louis, July 4, 1929. He studied at Harvard Univ. (B.A., 1950) and at the Univ. of N.C. (M.A., 1954); then returned to Harvard to complete his training under John Ward and Nino Pirrotta (PhD., 1961, with the diss. Musica mundana: Variations on a Pythagorean Theme); served on its faculty (1960-67). He taught at the Univ. of Pa. (1967-69), N.Y.U. (1969-78), and the Univ. of N.C. (from 1978). Haar also was general ed. of the Journal of the American Musicological Society (1966-69), later serving as the society's president (1976-78). With L. Bernstein, he ed. The Duos of Jhan Cero (1977). He pub!. The Tugendsterne of Harsdorffer and Staden (1965) and Essays on Italian Poetry and Music in the Renaissance, 1350-1600 (1986). With 1. Fenlon, he pub!.
