In these lectures we examine and derive various properties of the thermodjmamic pressure of point particles in Quantum Statistical Mechanics. Our main aim is to demonstrate that the pressure can be calculated from a variational principle the thermodjmamic pressure is given by the supremum over a class of invariant states of the entropy per unit volume at fixed energy per unit volume. This type of variational principle has been discussed previously for lattice and hard core systems, both classically and quantum mechanically. It is of principal interest because it can provide information concerning the equilibrium states of the system in addition to properties of the pressure. For example in the simpler models it has been used to derive conditions under which the system is in a pure phase or, alternatively, in a mixed phase.
