Hey entrepreneurs..

Dave Rogenmoser here, and I want to share with you the REAL story of my business and how it’s become what it is today. I know it’s easy to look at me on these videos and landing pages and assume I’ve always known how to do this… but that’s far from the truth. I’ve been learning this on the fly for the past several years.
Last month, my 9-month old business made exactly $25,292.98 and this month we’re on track to earn more than $48,000.

The majority of that revenue comes from customers who pay for our services EVERY MONTH.

But it hasn’t always been this way.

See, less than a year ago, I was your classic “wantrepreneur.”

You know the type of person I’m talking about it. The one who says they want to start a business…or maybe has even started a business…but who hasn’t really made a dime from ANY of it.

I wasn’t just wading in “wantrepreneur” waters, but I had just executed a full ganor off the high dive and felt like I was finally swimming with the big boys. I’d already spent a few months and a few thousand dollars building out a piece of software that I was CONVINCED was going to make me millions. I had EVERYTHING in place that I thought made a person an actual business owner. I had the product. The bank account. The business cards…

And I know I’m a little biased, but my business cards looked GOOD. Vistaprint didn’t know what hit ‘em.

But there was one small problem.

Even though I’d planned for what felt like everything, I’d forgotten about one key thing.

I had no customers.

Zero. Zilch. Nada.

NO ONE wanted to buy my product.

I’d assumed that once I opened the doors, people would come flocking to my doors to buy my software.

But you know what assuming does, right? All it does it make an ASS out of you and me.

Talk about a rude awakening.

So after months and countless hours of hard work, I found myself with only crickets for customers and more than $10,000 in debt from my (now) failed business.

But honestly, I’m not sad about it. Not even a little bit.

In fact, failing was one of the BEST things that could have happened because it wasn’t just a SUPER cheap education on how to NOT run a business, but it also what opened my eyes to the consulting business model that has grown my new company from $0 to more than $200,000 in less than a year.

I’ve made a TON of mistakes along the way as I’ve tried building my own businesses. I’m going to use the examples of a few of my friends to share three of the biggest consulting mistakes I’ve seen myself and others make. Hopefully by seeing them here…you can avoid making these mistakes yourself.
The Top 3 Mistakes Made By New and Growing Consultants

Mistake 1: Forgetting the Right Mindset
A few years back, a friend of mine went to a leadership seminar. One of the first activities they did was to raise as much money in 3 hours as possible, to help provide meals for people who couldn’t afford food on their own. Their group started planning and made a goal to help 10,000 people. They made calls asking for money to buy food, found a local shelter to donate the food to, and ended up raising enough money to help more than 15,000 people in just a few hours.

What they didn’t know is that the group in the previous seminar had a bigger vision of what was possible. With only a few thousand dollars difference, the earlier group found a way to provide meals for over 100,000 people, in the same amount of time.

And what’s interesting is that one wasn’t necessarily “right” or “wrong.”

With a bigger perspective…a bigger vision of what was possible…BOTH groups were confident they could improve their results by 10x for the next time.

It’s the same thing in business. We are only capable of performing and helping others at a level that matches what we believe we can in our head.

Are you stuck at your 9-to-5, desperate to break free?
Are you just starting out on your own, and you’re not as confident in selling as you want to be?
Are you trying to scale your business so you can work less and earn more, but aren’t quite sure how to do it?

Successful people aren’t necessarily any more talented than “un-successful” people. But they definitely think about business, life, and relationships in a dramatically different way than those who seem to constantly struggle.

Mistake #2: Building the Wrong Toolset
Another one of my friends is a hard-core (recovering) perfectionist. AND he’s a business owner.

But he’s stuck in a pretty big trap. He tries to do everything himself.

He does his own copywriting, marketing, product creation, sales, website development, and also tries to steer the company forward.

It makes me tired just thinking about it.

Honestly, he struggles the most with delegating much of anything because he feels he can do it better than anyone else.

The problem is…he’s right. He does do most things better than anyone else.

But he spends so much of his time and mental energy just trying to fit everything in and figure it out on his own, that he’s hit a wall. He’s grown as much as he can. He’s doubled his income, by doubling the time he puts in. But he’s miserable. If he’s not working, he’s not earning. It’s no longer scalable because he can’t be scaled.

It’s SO easy to get stuck in the idea that you have to do everything yourself. But delegating and outsourcing work to other people can set you up to make some really powerful leaps forward.

Frankly, it’s the only reason that my company has grown as fast as it has. The three of us who run the business spend time doing the things we do best, and nothing else. We don’t spend even a minute trying to deliver client work on our own. We’ve spend time building a team of people we can rely on, who focus on the areas they’re the best at, and everyone involved benefits.

Mistake #3 - Ignoring the Power of Recurring Assets
A few weeks ago I was talking with my friend James. He’s been a freelance software developer for a few years now. It doesn’t matter if he’s building websites or designing software, he’s amazing, so it’s not surprising that he’s built a pretty substantial portfolio of clients. As an example, his most recent client has been worth more than a million dollars to his business.

Wow.

If you’ve ever freelanced before, you know the most important and most frustrating part of the job is finding new work. You want to spend time doing what you do best! Not spending hours trying to convince people to use your services!

As we talked about his business a few weeks back, he said he was tired, and felt trapped.

Specifically, he was stuck in the “freelancer’s trap”.

He works hard to land a new client and make some money. Then put his nose to the grindstone to deliver on the promised work.

But then once the work was finished, James was instantly back at square one. He’d have to go and grind to find another new client to sign, while no new money came in.

It’s an exhausting and broken model….that most people still follow.

But there is HUGE power in using systems to scale your business. Especially when you create a system that harnesses the power of recurring revenue.

That’s a huge benefit of marketing consulting. When your purpose is to help drive traffic and potential clients to a business, the likelihood they’ll need your services month after month is VERY high.

Businesses need your help. They want to grow. Most are already spending money on marketing. So if they’re already spending money on marketing, why shouldn’t they be writing the check TO YOU to help them grow their business?
