The origin of the theory of probability must be traced to the compelling need to develop a mathematical model to analyze chance phenomena. Intu- itive approaches had to be the beginning for this. These led to the fashioning of certain crude tools which, over time, were chiseled into the present day accepted model of a basic structure resting on abstraction, definitions and a consistent set of axioms. Measure and integrals play an essential role in the development of this theory. This book is concerned with certain foundational aspects of this development.
The author's intention in writing this book is to help introduce probability theory as a subject of study in the graduate Mathematics and -Statistics pro- grams, to help the teacher present the theory with greater ease and to help the student feel comfortable learning the subject. The aim is not to present the frontier results of the day but to gather in one place most of the basic material, a good knowledge of which will translate into the ability to read and digest current literature and provide a strong foundation for pursuing research in the subject.
