Adolphe Braun was born in Besancon, France in 1811. He was trained as a fabric designer, then in 1853 began his career as a photographer of flowers. He produced over 300 flower photographs that were used for textile designers and painters. These photographs were extremely successful. One of his albums was presented to the Empress Eugenie of France and earned him a medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1855.

In the 1860s, Braun began creating landscape views across Europe and published them through his photography studio. In 1866, there was a push to create accurate records of France’s great artwork. His studio published many reproductions of these works. Due to his studio’s success, he was one of two photographic studios asked to photograph the opening of the Suez Canal in Egypt in 1869. Braun died in Mulhouse, France in 1877.
