We often wish we had said something witty we read or hear. Pithy quotations always light up the dullest world. With this volume we hope to do just that.
The anthology began when we sought to add a little light humour and interest to the Gourmet Guides twitter page. The same applies to our collection of menu translation blunders, which will be appearing shortly.

THE BOOK:
Wit: “what oft was thought, but ne'er so well express'd” - Alexander Pope
“I wish I had said that” - Oscar Wilde. "You will, Oscar; you will.” - James Whistler

At one time in my career I was making frequent after-dinner speeches, and for audiences in the hotel and restaurant sector I sought to use pithy food quotations to garnish my words. It would have been so much easier to find them, had a source like this been available then! It is an invaluable reference.
We have avoided any quotes which cannot easily be tweeted. Some of them may require adaptation to suit specific tweets. Most of them are close enough to 140 characters.
Many food quotations are long-winded to say the least, and for that reason they do not appear here.
The entries are in alphabetical order of the names of those who said or wrote them, but for the ease of reading we have placed the name of the person making the quote after the words they have uttered.
If the reader is looking for a quote on a particular food or a specific speaker/writer, then the “search” tool can be used with ease.

THE COMPILER:
Robert West qualified as a Solicitor in 1969, his studies revolving around the University of Leeds, Columbia University in New York, Leiden University in Holland and The College of Law in Guildford.
He has been running a translation company, Languages de Luxe, since 1980. He personally specialises in legal, financial and banking translations, from French, German, and Luxembourgish into English. He also works on texts relating to tourism, food and wine.
For many years now, he has been closely involved with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, where a great many volumes bear his name. So much so that in 1988 he was honoured by the Grand Duke as an Officer of the Order of Merit, for his services to that country.
