A refutation of the media myth that the Aussie is a natural born soldier and when in uniform immediately becomes a world-class soldier. This is incorrect, and there is little in civilian life, even in 1914, that related to war service. Those who enlisted in 1914 had no idea of what the war would be like, but those who did so in 1916, after the casualty lists came in, knew there was a high chance of death or mutilation. Training, more training and training when out of the line was necessary for the Australian Army to evolve into the first class fighting machine that it was in 1918 - but tens of thousands of men had been killed and wounded in 1915, 1916 and 1917. This item shows just how much training of all ranks in an infantry battalion was needed to achieve a high standard and to maintain it, to the last day of fighting. There are no names or detail of decorations awarded, just an account of the life and times of a battalion 1916-1918, by amalgamating several battalions.
