While we live in a time where it seems as if female rule is a given, what most of us pay little attention to is the factors which allowed for this to become possible. Throughout the course of English history, the plight of powerful females has been something of contention with contemporary and modern historians alike, and it is for this reason that the contributions made to the English line of succession by Empress Matilda, Lady Jane Grey and Mary Tudor are significant, and deserve to be explored in further detail. This book aims to consider the limitations to which female claimants were subject during this time and how, in spite of being by blood destined to rule, they so often managed to miss the throne; while also exploring the ways in which they were able to assert their authority in the context of a developing respect for female monarchy.
