Years ago, the reputation of 4X4 roads in the San Juan Mountains was enough to keep many people away. Their names were whispered around campfires, like the names of gunslingers who once lived in their midst.

The days when reality and reputation shared equal footing have come and gone. Just as the gunslingers grew old and mellowed out, so did the 4x4 roads. That's not to say you can't get into trouble with these old timers. Never take them lightly. If you’re caught off-guard, they can kill you as surely as Bat Masterson's gun. On the other hand, any stock 4X4 with a confident and experienced driver can handle the legends in this book without giving them much thought.

But what of the legends? Why are they legends?

This book recalls the stories that were told in Volume Three of the Adventures of Pass Patrol written during the 1990s. Pass Patrol traveled the legends of the San Juan Mountains. Larry E Heck wrote about their adventures and published guide books for others to follow. Although the original series has faded into history, its stories are still being told around campfires and are now retold in Pass Patrol Recollections.
