This book tells the story of our warehouse conversion from looking for, finding and purchasing the property; through choosing and communicating with contractors; signing contracts; pitfalls to look out for; design; cost assessment; financing; build; the problems we faced and how we overcame them; dealing with local and national authorities; documentation; business rates and council taxes; building tests and building completion; the work that we undertook ourselves; and contact details for suppliers and organisations.
This is not a self-build property book in the sense that you build everything with your own two hands. Nor is it meant to be an A to Z guide to every possible design option available. We found a builder and an architect to do most of the work on the warehouse, so we describe the process of working with them. However, we undertook most of the work on the building surrounds, and some things on the building itself, by ourselves.
