This book is a short introduction to the Chinese language for the English speaker. Specifically, it focuses on Mandarin Chinese (also called Standard Chinese). There are quick overviews of many subjects relating to Chinese such as the script system in use, pronunciation including tones, grammar, and even a section on the art of calligraphy. Included is a miniature dictionary on some common terms showing stroke order for the written form.
This is an interesting book that will give you a taste of what to expect if you were to study Chinese in-depth. This book alone is not nearly comprehensive enough to really teach someone a significant amount of Chinese. But as an introductory book, it works well. I have never studied Chinese before, but I picked this up with some curiosity and left understanding a little bit about the world's most commonly spoken language.
