An article entitled Flammcnwerfer in Piuizerkampfmagen, written by Oberstleutnant 1 )r.-Ing. Olbrieh of the Heeres Wa Pruf 6 (Army Automotive Design Department), was published in June 1939. As related by the following excerpts, Olbrich's article provides a unique insight into the complex factors governing the design of lamethrowing tanks. Olbrieh credited the first use of flamethrowers in tanks to the Italians during their campaign in Abyssinia in 1936. A traversable flamethrower was installed in the Ansaldo C.V.33 Carri-Fiammi light tank, replacing the machine gun (MG). The flame oil container was towed behind the tank on a single axle trailer.
