One Step From Earth is a set of chronologically ordered short stories of science-fiction genre from the near future to the far distant future.
The theme of the stories is that human discovers a way of moving matter between two 'doors', which are connected through the different 'layer' of space, but can be any physical distance apart, so fascinating expansion into space is possible, beginning on the Moon and thence to colonise all parts of the galaxy. Of course the limit is that a receiving 'door' has to be physically transported to the destination before the gadget can be used.
Harrison also explores the effects this sort of travels has on human society (travels with no vehicles, no commuting, live anywhere, abolished physical boundaries, deals with criminals and even producing deities).
