The 19th century, obsessed by the discovery of Spanish painting, the rediscovery of Vermeer, the revelation of Rembrandt and his immensity, the marvel of Ruisdael and the Dutch landscape, for so long the source and inspiration of the Barbizon school and the Impressionists, abandoned the Italianate, Baroque vision of Rubens, Bernini and Lebrun in favour of a Madrid-Amsterdam axis which was better suited to its own aspirations. The Rome-Paris-Antwerp triple alliance was out of fashion. For Stendhal, 17th- century pictorial art was Guido Reni, Domenichino, Guercino and Pietro da Cortona.
