Kate Greenaway was an English children’s book illustrator and writer. In London, she attended the Royal College of Art. Her first published work was a collection of verses about children titled, Under the Window (1879), it became her first bestseller. In 1889, Greenaway was elected to membership in the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colors. Her illustrations consisted mainly of little children in late eighteenth century fashions, which inspired clothing designers of the time. She illustrated over 60 children's books and her art was rivaled only by Randolph Caldecott and Walter Crane. She died of breast cancer in 1901 at the age of 55.
