Modern survival: Outdoor gear and savvy to bring you back alive

Modern survival: Outdoor gear and savvy to bring you back alive by Dwight R Schuh
English | 1979 | ISBN: 0679208054 | 182 Pages | PDF | 16.6 MB

How to get out of the path of a tornado (move at right angles), recognize dangerously low body temperature (irrationality is one sign), or start a fire in heavy rain ("A book of matches stuck in your shirt pocket won't do"). With these and other guidelines, veteran outdoorsman Schuh prepares the novice to survive not in furthest Siberia but under the ordinary emergency conditions met with in hunting, hiking, skiing, etc. He'll tell you how to interpret professional weather forecasts (and why not to rely on your local station); which maps to acquire and how to read them; the best methods of signalling an airplane for help or the steps in treating a snakebite. (In the latter case, after you've determined you can't get to a doctor.) The final chapters describe first-aid fundamentals and basic survival equipment; but the salutary emphasis throughout is on the rudiments of getting along in an increasingly outdoorsy world. Most boatsmen, he points out, don't even know the rules of the road.
