This book is addressed primarily to a general cultivated audience and does not assume a knowledge of German. It is the first extensive treatment in English of the subject and its purpose is to give an account of these romantic novels, as well as to explain what I conceive to be their importance. But since these works, with a few exceptions, are also not all that well known to those who do read German, it is my hope that what I have written may also appeal to those who already have some acquaintance with the material, especially since the only book in German specifically on this subject was published as far back as 1916. With this latter purpose in mind I have given references to the original sources of the quotations which, when German, I have translated in my text, and also a selected list of books and articles on these authors and their novels, both for those who read German and for those who do not.
