At Valley Forge, Baron von Steuben began to write instalments of his drill instructions which grew into Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States. This manual of drill and field-service regulations became the foundation of military training and procedure. Commonly known as the army's "blue book," it remained the official United States military guide until 1812.
