The anger and disillusionment that the world provokes is, at the same time, remarkable and disgusting. As sentient beings with a conscience that strives for that which is good we see ourselves surrounded by the ugliness and degradation of sensless suffering, poverty and starvation caused by wars and a myriad of blatant injustices that invest in the destruction of the spirit of men, women and children for the benfit of power and financial gain. This evil that we see around us is not who we are.The brainwashing inflicted upon humanity, overtly and subliminally, by indifferent corporations and callous governments, in all its forms, is steady and relentless, so much so that we are, all too often, lulled into a state of complacency and apathy. We intuitively know what is right, it’s just too damned hard to do anything about it.Poetry will not change the world. Hell, it won’t even make a dent. What it may do, however, is that for one moment, one brief moment, it will allow us to open the shutters to our feelings and in so doing expose the truths that lie in the clarity of words that express the sincerity of our thoughts and the decency in our hearts, keeping in mind that where there is brutality there is also much hope.
