Jean de Meun (1250-1305) continued the vast allegorical narrative called the Romance of the Rose between 1269 and 1278 some forty years after Guillaume de Lorris (fl. 1230) wrote the first 4,000 lines. The Romance of the Rose was one of the most popular medieval manuscripts of the medieval period. The narrative follows a young man, the Lover, on a quest for a lady. Along the way, he is aided, distracted, and rebuffed by various personified figures, including Reason, the Old Woman, and Rebuff. Most infamously, the Romance of the Rose repeats "many key arguments from classical misogamous or anti-marriage texts" which Christine de Pizan, wrote against in her defense of women.
