Although it is difficult to pinpoint exactly when British Commandos originated, the name Jates back to the South African War of 1899-
1902. The Boers raiseJ marauding bands known as commandos, which carried out lightning strikes and raid s. When the Germans invaded Norway in April 1940, a British force was formed with IndependentCompanies, which became the forerunners of the wartime commandos. At first these com mandos were entirely an Army organization of volunteers, but in February 1942 the first Royall Marines Commando was formed.
