Michael R Underwood’s Geekomancy series is the tale of Ree Reyes, and her adventures in Geekomancy with her mentor, Eastwood in his quest to rescue her mother from hell. But, more than that this is a series for every Geek who wanted to crawl the walls like Spiderman or smack someone with Jean Grey’s telekinesis. Book 1 was Ree’s introduction to this world, and I admit I haven’t yet read book 2 because when I found a new title out in the series, I couldn’t stop myself from picking it up. I am still not sure whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

This is a novella in the series, though longer than I thought it would be to fit that definition. Ree and her geek haven and place of work Grognard’s are attacked one night and what follows, is a siege. The Geekomancy version of the Battle of Helm’s deep in a bar.

Monsters come thick and fast, and that’s about all for much of the book. I didn’t much like that, but then I realised this is a book where everyone gets their geek on. It’s a way to show off the gamers, the movie and TV, and comic powers we all want and will never have. Once I realised that, the action was easier to bear, and a wonderful part of this book is the pacing.

The action scenes are tight and fast, and show off the geekomancers’ powers wonderfully. Monsters are big and bad, and… I will say, very unusual. The author manager to surprise me in that regard, pleasantly so.

Don’t dismiss this as an action fest though this is one small part of a larger plot development, but it is left to the very end, and it sets up some interesting possibilities for the future for the series.
