Silicon on insulator (SOI) is a very attractive technology for large volume integrated circuit production and is particularly good for low-voltage, low-power and high-speed digital systems. SOI has also proved to be effective in various niche and growing markets. IC processes based on SOI are known to reduce susceptibility to radiation, and have been used for many years in high radiation environments. SOI is also used for power integrated circuits, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), integrated optics and high temperature applications.

Analog filters are commonly used in areas such as electronics, communications, controls and signal processing. It is desirable for engineers and students in these areas to have a sound understanding of basic filter theory. This book is intended to be an intermediate level treatise of this subject. It can be used either as a textbook in a course at either the undergraduate or graduate level, or as a reference for engineers who find it useful to have an introductory knowlege or a general overview of analog filters. It introduces the theory behind filter development and the design techniques commonly used in practice, including the application of standard software packages. Extensive use is made of MATLAB for examples and problem sets, allowing readers to acquire familiarity with the methods for designing filters with a modern software tool.

This book presents a systematic, comprehensive treatment of analog and discrete signal analysis and synthesis and an introduction to analog communication theory. This evolved from my 40 years of teaching at Oklahoma State University (OSU). It is based on three courses, Signal Analysis (a second semester junior level course), Active Filters (a first semester senior level course), and Digital signal processing (a second semester senior level course). I have taught these courses a number of times using this material along with existing texts. The references for the books and journals (over 160 references) are listed in the bibliography section. At the undergraduate level, most signal analysis courses do not require probability theory. Only, a very small portion of this topic is included here. I emphasized the basics in the book with simple mathematics and the soph- tication is minimal. Theorem-proof type of material is not emphasized. The book uses the following model: 1. Learn basics 2. Check the work using bench marks 3. Use software to see if the results are accurate The book provides detailed examples (over 400) with applications. A thr- number system is used consisting of chapter number – section number – example or problem number, thus allowing the student to quickly identify the related material in the appropriate section of the book. The book includes well over 400 homework problems. Problem numbers are identified using the above three-number system.

This lecture provides a hands-on glimpse of the field of electrical engineering. The introduced applications utilize the NI ELVIS hardware and software platform to explore concepts such as circuits, power, analog sensing, and introductory analog signal processing such as signal generation, analog filtering, and audio and music processing.
