The vitality of the cardiovascular system, which consists of the heart, vas­ culature, and blood, depends on its response to a host of complex stimuli, including biological, chemical, electrical, mechanical, and thermal. The focus of this book, however, is on the response of the heart and arteries to mechanical loads from the perspective of nonlinear solid mechanics. Through my own research in this field, I have come to realize that study­ ing the complex responses of cardiovascular cells, tissues, and organs nec­ essarily requires a combined theoretical, experimental, and computational approach. Theory is needed to guide the performance and interpretation of experiments as well as to synthesize the results; experiment is needed to study the responses of the system to well-controlled loads and to test can­ didate hypotheses and theories; and due to the geometric and material non­ linearities inherent to cardiovascular mechanics, computation is needed to analyze data as well as to solve boundary and initial value problems that correspond to either experimental or in vivo conditions. One of the primary goals of this book is to introduce together basic analytical, experimental, and computational methods and to illustrate how these methods can and must be integrated to gain a more complete understanding of the bio­ mechanics of the heart and vasculature. Despite the focus on cardiovascu­ lar mechanics, the fundamental methods, indeed many of the specific results, are generally applicable to many different soft tissues.

It has been great fun to write this book, even though it has taken longer than planned, and occasionally been exasperating. The most difficult problem was deciding what to exclude among so many interesting things, because the available material usually exceeded the space. Because a book like this covers so many aspects, each component must be limited. This book is intended for graduate and undergraduate students as well as professional scientists who want to work with animal flight or to gain some insight into flight mechanics, aerodynamics, energetics, physiology, morpho­ logy, ecology and evolution. My aim has not been to give the whole mathe­ matical explanation of flight, but to provide an outline and summary of the main theories for the understanding of how aerofoils respond to an airflow. I also hope to give the reader some insight into how flight morphology and the various wing shapes have evolved and are adapted to different ecological niches and habitats.

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE), known as prion diseases, have been recognized for nearly 300 years in animals and almost 100 years in humans. Modern studies, including the protein-misfolding cyclic amplification (PMCA), have greatly advanced our understanding of the pathogenesis of prion diseases and facilitated the identification of new prion diseases in animals and humans.

The Atlas provides a complete overview of all major structures of the mouse brain that can be identified in Golgi preparations. The most important feature is its three-dimensional integrity since all structures and nerve tracts can be followed from one section to the next one with uninterrupted continuity. The Golgi Atlas presents a series of camera lucida drawings of the entire telencephalon and upper brain stem of the young postnatal mouse in 24 transverse, 11 sagittal and 15 horizontal planes. The drawings were prepared from selected brains stained in toto with the Golgi method, that have been serially sectioned in the three orthogonal planes.
