Information and Coding Theory by Gareth A. Jones , J. Mary Jones
English | PDF (True) | 2000 | 217 Pages | ISBN : 1852336226 | 14.9 MB

As this Preface is being written, the twentieth century is coming to an end. Historians may perhaps come to refer to it as the century of information, just as its predecessor is associated with the process of industrialisation. Successive technological developments such as the telephone, radio, television, computers and the Internet have had profound effects on the way we live. We can see pic tures of the surface of Mars or the early shape of the Universe. The contents of a whole shelf-load of library books can be compressed onto an almost weight less piece of plastic. Billions of people can watch the same football match, or can keep in instant touch with friends around the world without leaving home. In short, massive amounts of information can now be stored, transmitted and processed, with surprising speed, accuracy and economy. Of course, these developments do not happen without some theoretical ba sis, and as is so often the case, much of this is provided by mathematics. Many of the first mathematical advances in this area were made in the mid-twentieth century by engineers, often relying on intuition and experience rather than a deep theoretical knowledge to lead them to their discoveries. Soon the math ematicians, delighted to see new applications for their subject, joined in and developed the engineers' practical examples into wide-ranging theories, com plete with definitions, theorems and proofs.

Multiphase reacting flows: modelling and simulation

Multiphase reacting flows: modelling and simulation by Daniele L. Marchisio, Rodney O. Fox
English | PDF | 2007 | 274 Pages | ISBN : 321172463X | 15.1 MB

This book entitled ''Multiphase reacting flows: modelling and simulation'' contains the lecture notes of the CISM (International Centre for Mechanical Sciences) course held in Udine, Italy, on July 3-7, 2006, and it describes various modelling approaches for dealing with polydisperse multiphase reacting flows. A multiphase reacting system is characterized by the presence of multiple phases and in this book we focus on disperse multiphase systems, where one phase can be considered as a continuum, whereas the additional phases are dispersed in the continuous one. In other words, in this book we deal with multiphase systems constituted by particles, droplets or bubbles (i.e., solid particles suspended in a continuous liquid phase, liquid droplets in a gaseous phase, or gas bubbles in liquid.) The other important characteristic elements of the systems discussed in this book are the presence of one or more chemical reactions and the turbulent nature of the flow. The chemical reactions usually involve all the phases present in the system and might be responsible for the formation or disappearance of the disperse and/or continuous phases.

Cavity Dynamics and Splashing Mechanism in Droplets by Zhaohao Li , Xiaoyu Wang , Junwei Shen , Yuning Zhang
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2024 | 91 Pages | ISBN : 3031542452 | 40.3 MB

This brief explores the pivotal realm of droplet cavitation, a subject of great significance for enhancing fuel atomization and improving various industrial processes. The authors employ high-speed photography experiments, analyze bubble dynamics equations, and utilize numerical simulations to explore the dynamic behavior of cavitation bubbles and droplets. The book analyzes the entire lifecycle of cavitation bubbles, their interactions with different liquid droplets, and the key parameters governing their oscillation and collapse and sheds light on the collapse mechanisms and shock wave propagation influenced by liquid droplets. Additionally, it investigates the dynamics of droplet spattering by categorizing spatter patterns under diverse conditions, discusses the critical stability of droplet surfaces, and reveals the mechanisms by which cavitation bubble collapses induce droplet breakage. Taking vapor bubbles and diesel droplets as examples, the dynamic characteristics of specific droplets containing bubbles are also analyzed. This book offers an in-depth understanding of these phenomena with practical implications for a wide range of industrial applications and is a useful tool for researchers and engineers working in the fields of fluid dynamics, combustion engineering, and atomization processes.

Fault Diagnosis: Models, Artificial Intelligence, Applications by Józef Korbicz, Zdzisław Kowalczuk, Jan M. Kościelny, Wojciech Cholewa
English | PDF | 2004 | 953 Pages | ISBN : 3540407677 | 84.7 MB

All real systems in nature - physical, biological and engineering ones - can malfunction and fail due to faults in their components. Logically, the chances for malfunctions increase with the systems' complexity. The complexity of engineering systems is permanently growing due to their growing size and the degree of automation, and accordingly increasing is the danger of fail ing and aggravating their impact for man and the environment. Therefore, in the design and operation of engineering systems, increased attention has to be paid to reliability, safety and fault tolerance. But it is obvious that, compared to the high standard of perfection that nature has achieved with its self-healing and self-repairing capabilities in complex biological organisms, fault management in engineering systems is far behind the standards of their technological achievements; it is still in its infancy, and tremendous work is left to be done. In technical control systems, defects may happen in sensors, actuators, components of the controlled object - the plant, or in the hardware or soft ware of the control framework. Such defects in the components may develop into a failure of the whole system.

Numerical Methods in Sensitivity Analysis and Shape Optimization by Emmanuel Laporte , Patrick Tallec
English | PDF | 2003 | 202 Pages | ISBN : 0817643222 | 12.3 MB

Sensitivity analysis and optimal shape design are key issues in engineering that have been affected by advances in numerical tools currently available. This book, and its supplementary online files, presents basic optimization techniques that can be used to compute the sensitivity of a given design to local change, or to improve its performance by local optimization of these data. The relevance and scope of these techniques have improved dramatically in recent years because of progress in discretization strategies, optimization algorithms, automatic differentiation, software availability, and the power of personal computers.

Parametrized Measures and Variational Principles by Pablo Pedregal
English | PDF | 1997 | 217 Pages | ISBN : 3764356979 | 15.3 MB

Weak convergence is a basic tool of modern nonlinear analysis because it enjoys the same compactness properties that finite dimensional spaces do: basically, bounded sequences are weak relatively compact sets. Nonetheless, weak conver gence does not behave as one would desire with respect to nonlinear functionals and operations. This difficulty is what makes nonlinear analysis much harder than would normally be expected. Parametrized measures is a device to under stand weak convergence and its behavior with respect to nonlinear functionals. Under suitable hypotheses, it yields a way of representing through integrals weak limits of compositions with nonlinear functions.
