Finite Elements Using Maple: A Symbolic Programming Approach

Finite Elements Using Maple: A Symbolic Programming Approach

Finite Elements Using Maple: A Symbolic Programming Approach by Artur Portela , Abdellatif Charafi
    English | PDF (True) | 2002 | 336 Pages | ISBN : 3540429867 | 19.6 MB

Almost all physical phenomena can be mathematically described in terms of differential equations. The finite element method is a tool for the appro- mate solution of differential equations. However, despite the extensive use of the finite element method by engineers in the industry, understanding the principles involved in its formulation is often lacking in the common user. As an approximation process, the finite ele~ent method can be for- lated with the general technique of weighted residuals. This technique has the advantage of enhancing the essential unity of all processes of approxi- tion used in the solution of differential equations, such as finite differences, finite elements and boundary elements. The mathematics used in this text, though reasonably rigorous, is easily understood by the user with only a basic knowledge of Calculus. A common problem to the courses of Engineering is to decide about the best form to incorporate the use of computers in education. Traditional c- pilers, and even integrated programming environments such as Turbo Pascal, are not the most appropriate, since the student has to invest much time in developing an executable program that, in the best of cases, will be able to solve only one definitive type of problems. Moreover, the student ends up learning more about programming than about the problem that he/she wants to solve with the developed executable program.

The Best Approximation Method An Introduction by Theodore V. Hromadka , Chung-Cheng Yen , George F. Pinder

The most commonly used numerical techniques in solving engineering and mathematical models are the Finite Element, Finite Difference, and Boundary Element Methods. As computer capabilities continue to impro':e in speed, memory size and access speed, and lower costs, the use of more accurate but computationally expensive numerical techniques will become attractive to the practicing engineer. This book presents an introduction to a new approximation method based on a generalized Fourier series expansion of a linear operator equation. Because many engineering problems such as the multi dimensional Laplace and Poisson equations, the diffusion equation, and many integral equations are linear operator equations, this new approximation technique will be of interest to practicing engineers. Because a generalized Fourier series is used to develop the approxi mator, a "best approximation" is achieved in the "least-squares" sense; hence the name, the Best Approximation Method. This book guides the reader through several mathematics topics which are pertinent to the development of the theory employed by the Best Approximation Method. Working spaces such as metric spaces and Banach spaces are explained in readable terms. Integration theory in the Lebesque sense is covered carefully. Because the generalized Fourier series utilizes Lebesque integration concepts, the integra tion theory is covered through the topic of converging sequences of functions with respect to measure, in the mean (Lp), almost uniformly IV and almost everywhere. Generalized Fourier theory and linear operator theory are treated in Chapters 3 and 4.

    Analysis of Geometrically Nonlinear Structures

Analysis of Geometrically Nonlinear Structures by Robert Levy , William R. Spillers
    English | PDF | 2003 | 277 Pages | ISBN : 1402016549 | 17.1 MB

The availability of computers has, in real terms, moved forward the practice of structural engineering. Where it was once enough to have any analysis given a complex configuration, the profession today is much more demanding. How engineers should be more demanding is the subject of this book. In terms of the theory of structures, the importance of geometric nonlinearities is explained by the theorem which states that "In the presence of prestress, geometric nonlinearities are of the same order of magnitude as linear elastic effects in structures. " This theorem implies that in most cases (in all cases of incremental analysis) geometric nonlinearities should be considered. And it is well known that problems of buckling, cable nets, fabric structures, … REQUIRE the inclusion of geometric nonlinearities. What is offered in the book which follows is a unified approach (for both discrete and continuous systems) to geometric nonlinearities which incidentally does not require a discussion of large strain. What makes this all work is perturbation theory. Let the equations of equilibrium for a system be written as where P represents the applied loads, F represents the member forces or stresses, and N represents the operator which describes system equilibrium.

Leonardo da Vinci’s Giant Crossbow by Matthew Landrus
    English | PDF | 2010 | 187 Pages | ISBN : 354068915X | 154.3 MB

Although Leonardo’s Giant Crossbow is one of his most popular drawings, it has been one of the least understood. "Leonardo’s Giant Crossbow" offers the first in-depth account of this drawing’s likely purpose and its highly resolved design. This fascinating book has a wealth of technical information about the Giant Crossbow drawing, as it’s a complete study of this project, though this is as accessible to the general audience as much as it is also informative with new discoveries for the professors of engineering, technology and art. The book explores the context of Leonardo’s invention with an examination of the extensive documentary evidence, a short history of the great crossbow and ballista, the first accurate translation of the text and the technical specifications, and a detailed analysis of Leonardo’s design process for the crossbow, from start to finish. Dozens of preparatory drawings, along with the recent discovery of nearly invisible metal stylus preparatory incisions under the ink of the Giant Crossbow drawing, are evidence of Leonardo’s intent to offer engineers and other viewers a thorough design of the massive machine. The book proposes these new discoveries with the help of a strategy that had been at the core of Leonardo’s working philosophy: the proportional method. As proven with an analysis of the Giant Crossbow project, he used a consistent approach to 1/3rd proportions throughout the design and drawing process and employed this kind of proportional strategy at the start of almost every important project. Thanks to this proof of his knowledge of geometry, evidence of his studies of impetus and force, and thanks to the highly polished and complex nature of the Giant Crossbow design, a later date for the drawing is proposed in the present book, associating the drawing with his drafting capabilities around 1490-93.

Applied Graph Theory in Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition by Abraham Kandel, Horst Bunke, Mark Last
    English | PDF | 2007 | 265 Pages | ISBN : 3540680195 | 9.7 MB

Graph theory has strong historical roots in mathematics, especially in topology. Its birth is usually associated with the “four-color problem” posed by Francis Guthrie 1 in 1852, but its real origin probably goes back to the Seven Bridges of Konigsber ¨ g 2 problem proved by Leonhard Euler in 1736. A computational solution to these two completely different problems could be found after each problem was abstracted to the level of a graph model while ignoring such irrelevant details as country shapes or cross-river distances. In general, a graph is a nonempty set of points (vertices) and the most basic information preserved by any graph structure refers to adjacency relationships (edges) between some pairs of points. In the simplest graphs, edges do not have to hold any attributes, except their endpoints, but in more sophisticated graph structures, edges can be associated with a direction or assigned a label. Graph vertices can be labeled as well. A graph can be represented graphically as a drawing (vertex=dot, edge=arc),but, aslongaseverypairofadjacentpointsstaysconnected by the same edge, the graph vertices can be moved around on a drawing without changing the underlying graph structure. The expressive power of the graph models placing a special emphasis on c- nectivity between objects has made them the models of choice in chemistry, physics, biology, and other ?elds.

    Handbook of Heuristics

Handbook of Heuristics by Rafael Martí, Panos M. Pardalos, Mauricio G. C. Resende
    English | PDF (True) | 2018 | 1372 Pages | ISBN : 3319071238 | 29.55 MB

Heuristics are strategies using readily accessible, loosely applicable information to control problem solving. Algorithms, for example, are a type of heuristic. By contrast, Metaheuristics are methods used to design Heuristics and may coordinate the usage of several Heuristics toward the formulation of a single method. GRASP (Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedures) is an example of a Metaheuristic. To the layman, heuristics may be thought of as ‘rules of thumb’ but despite its imprecision, heuristics is a very rich field that refers to experience-based techniques for problem-solving, learning, and discovery. Any given solution/heuristic is not guaranteed to be optimal but heuristic methodologies are used to speed up the process of finding satisfactory solutions where optimal solutions are impractical. The introduction to this Handbook provides an overview of the history of Heuristics along with main issues regarding the methodologies covered. This is followed by Chapters containing various examples of local searches, search strategies and Metaheuristics, leading to an analyses of Heuristics and search algorithms. The reference concludes with numerous illustrations of the highly applicable nature and implementation of Heuristics in our daily life. Each chapter of this work includes an abstract/introduction with a short description of the methodology. Key words are also necessary as part of top-matter to each chapter to enable maximum search engine optimization. Next, chapters will include discussion of the adaptation of this methodology to solve a difficult optimization problem, and experiments on a set of representative problems.
