Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology

Advances in Nuclear Science and Technology by Ernest J. Henley, Jeffery Lewins, Martin Becker
English | PDF | 1979 | 574 Pages | ISBN : 0306400308 | 40.9 MB

The present volume in our annual review series reviews a wide range of developments, giving a broad interpretation to the "technology" of our title. Starting at the beginning, Science, we have the review of basic nuclear physics data of Walker and Weaver for reactor kinetics, particularly, there fore, delayed neutron data. In the search for better and better accuracy, it is being realized that this involves the closest scrutiny of fundamental data, given to us here from the Birmingham school. Associated with this review of data is the review from Italy by Professor Pacilio and his co workers of the theory of reactor kinetics in the stochastic form, and a valuable compilation of the theory underlying a wide range of practical techniques. Tending more to technology come the papers by Jervis, reviewing the application of digital computers to the control of large nuclear power stations as developed in both the united Kingdom and Canada, Pickman's review of the design of fuels for heavy water reactors, and the account by Ishi kawa and Inabe of the new Japanese Research Reactor Program, itself initially directed largely to fuel element studies. The balance of the volume is made up of more philoso phical contributions to the practicalities of nuclear power.

The Synthesis of the Elements

The Synthesis of the Elements: The Astrophysical Quest for Nucleosynthesis and What It Can Tell Us About the Universe by Giora Shaviv
English | PDF | 2012 | 699 Pages | ISBN : 3642283845 | 18.1 MB

This book describes the origins and evolution of the chemical elements we and the cosmos are made of. The story starts with the discovery of the common elements on Earth and their subsequent discovery in space. How do we learn the composition of the distant stars? How did progress in quantum theory, nuclear physics, spectroscopy, stellar structure and evolution, together with observations of stars, converge to provide an incredibly detailed picture of the universe? How does research in the micro-world explain the macro-world? How does progress in one affect the other, or lack of knowledge in one inhibit progress in the other? In short, Shaviv describes how we discovered the various pieces of the jigsaw that form our present picture of the universe; and how we sometimes put these in the wrong place before finding in the right one.

The Chernobyl, Fukushima Daiichi and Deepwater Horizon Disasters from a Natural Science and Humanities Perspective by Volker Hoensch
English | EPUB | 2022 | 214 Pages | ISBN : 3662653184 | 11.4 MB

In our everyday conceptions we use the laws of nature with their enormous possibilities of technical progress for the benefit of mankind. The catastrophes of Chernobyl (1986), Fukushima Daichii (2011) and in the Gulf of Mexico, explosion of the drilling platform Deepwater Horizon (2010), have shaken this world's view. Is it a matter of human or technical failure?

Applied Laser Spectroscopy for Nuclear Physics: Isotope Shifts in the Mercury Isotopic Chain and Laser Ion Source Development by Thomas Day Goodacre
English | PDF,EPUB | 2021 | 138 Pages | ISBN : 3030738884 | 27.1 MB

This thesis explores two distinct applications of laser spectroscopy: the study of nuclear ground state properties, and element selective radioactive ion beam production. It also presents the methods and results of an investigation into isotope shifts in the mercury isotopic chain. These Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) developments are detailed, together with an RILIS ionization scheme that allowed laser ionized ion beams of chromium, germanium, radium and tellurium to be generated at the Isotope Mass Separator On-Line (ISOLDE) facility.
