Designed to replace larger 4 engined patrol aircraft, the graceful P4M was built around 2 R-4360 radials and 2 J33 jet engines. The Mercator became famous as an intelligence collection aircraft flying electronic surveillance missions against Russia, Red China and North Korea, a role eventually taken over by the 1/3 smaller and less powerful P2V Neptune. The P4M-1Qs flew in this role from 1952 thru 1960 and at least 2 aircraft were shot down by hostile countries.
