Dimitar Nenov (1901–1953), a pianist composer of extraordinary depth, Nenov’s music remains largely unknown beyond Bulgaria—where he is still rarely programmed—despite his towering influence on 20th-century Eastern European music. After Passion (ALPHA747), Véronique Gens reunites with Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas' ensemble Les Surprises to celebrate a type of role intrinsically linked to 17th- and 18th-century French baroque opera: queens! “Operatic queens are powerful women, often torn between duty and passion, with a fundamentally complex psychology. They display a range of emotions to match the theatre’s dramatic and scenic effects; they also demand above all music that is by turns intense and sophisticated.” writes Benoît Dratwicki of the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles, a partner in this project. With Véronique Gens, one could not dream of a better embodiment of these women's destinies set to music by the most famous composers of the time (Rameau, Rebel, Dauvergne, Royer, Desmarest, Salomon, Stuck, Destouches, Francœur…), many of whom have been unjustly forgotten.

Born in Zaragoza in 1999, Miguel Bonal began studying the viola da gamba at the age of seven. He continued his higher education at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, where he obtained the highest distinctions. For his first solo recital, released as part of the Alpha Classics "Baroque Stories" series dedicated to new talent, he presents a programme of reference works written for the viola da gamba as well as transcriptions: we move from the magnificent soldierly music of Tobias Hume to the refinement of Marin Marais and Abel, from the virtuosity of Schenck to the stylistic synthesis of Telemann… Miguel Bonal also allows us to hear all the mystery of Bach's Suite for Cello No. 2 in D minor played on the viola da gamba, before venturing into 19th-century music with Gabriel Fauré's famous Après un rêve and Francisco Tárrega's Recuerdos de la Alhambra, further evidence of the timelessness of the viola da gamba.

Jonathan Nott and the Bamberg Symphony started recording the complete symphonies of Gustav Mahler for Tudor in 2005, and the 2013 release of the Symphony No. 8 in E flat major is the crowning achievement of the project.

Jonathan Nott and the Bamberger Symphoniker have written a special chapter in recording history with this series. Currently nominated in the 2012 BBC Music Magazine Awards, their recording of Mahler Symphony No.3 (TUDOR7170) was a BBC Music Magazine Orchestral Choice; “a recorded spaciousness which lets every ensemble and solo spiritually resound.”

With his "Book of Sounds," the visionary polymath Hans Otte penned one of the most magnificent creations in the contemporary piano repertoire. Although Otte completed the work in three years (1979-1982), "The Book" represents a lifetime of experimentation and a synthesis of methodology. Called “a revelation of clarity and bite" by the New York Times pianist Conor Hanick recorded the complete work for Il Pirata Records.

Dub Colossus is making a return this year, with the release of Dub Will Keep Us Together. When Nick Page, the visionary behind Dub Colossus, passed in 2021, he left an unfinished album, which a group of collaborators has now completed. It is both a celebration and a continuation of Nick’s work.

Johann Sebastian Bach wrote six harpsichord concertos and compiled them in a volume around 1738. Most of his concertos for one or more harpsichords are probably arrangements of earlier concertos, mostly by Bach himself. The ‘grand seigneur of early music’ Sigiswald Kuijken combines Bach’s six harpsichord concertos and the three double concertos for two harpsichords with the two violin concertos and the double concerto for two violins, which Bach also arranged as harpsichord concertos. All twelve concertos appear in a series of three CDs, the second of which is now available. Belgian harpsichordist Mario Sarrechia plays the solo part in the two concertos BWV 1052 & 1058, Taiwanese harpsichordist Hsiu-Tzu Ryanas in the concerto BWV 1056, and Sigiswald Kuijken himself takes the solo in the violin concerto BWV 1042. Sigiswald Kuijken casts all the orchestral parts as soloists, as is customary with La Petite Bande and as was probably also practised by Bach – a theory that Kuijken underpins with ample evidence.

Long After the Fire is the debut collaborative album from Vicki Peterson (The Bangles) and John Cowsill (The Cowsills, The Beach Boys), released via Label 51 Recordings.
