When François-Joseph Gossec left the concert stage on February 16, 1829, he was 95 years old. He had lived through an era of colossal upheaval: kings had come and gone, the executioners of the Revolution had raged, Napoleon was no more—yet the farmer’s son from Hainaut had steered his little musical ship past every reef and enjoyed high esteem under the most diverse rulers. This tenacious vitality is palpable everywhere: in the monumental Requiem and in the compositions for the Revolution, in his aristocratic and delicate quartets, and in the symphonies, which he published in sets of half a dozen each during the 1760s. After Simon Gaudenz was honored with an Opus Klassik award in 2020 for his recording of the *Six Symphonies à 4 parties*, Op. 3, he is now collaborating with the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra Heilbronn on Op. 6, in which the obligatory strings are at times reinforced by two oboes, giving the subtly shifting music perhaps even greater power.
