Emil de Waal Old News returns with Novelties, an album where deep musical roots meet freedom, openness, and innovation. The band’s story is closely tied to the late clarinetist Elith “Nulle” Nykjær Jørgensen, with whom they previously performed and recorded. Together, they reimagined Danish and American classics by composers including Sidney Bechet, John Mogensen, Hans Henrik Ley, Aske Bentzon, Kenneth Knudsen, Fats Waller, Bessie Smith, and Sven Gyldmark. On Novelties, they carry Nulle’s spirit forward with a fresh collection of original compositions that blend tradition and modern expression. The ensemble features Emil de Waal (drums), Jacob Anderskov (keys), Randi Laubek (vocals), Gustaf Ljunggren (guitars/reeds), and Henriette Groth (clarinet) — five leading musicians in the Danish jazz scene.

Recorded in August 1973 — the tour for Foxtrot (1972) having ended in May of that year — Genesis' members joined for a short time to write new material which covered a number of themes, including the loss of English folk culture and an increased American influence. Hence the inspiration for the title Selling England by the Pound.

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme is the third studio album by the American folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel. Produced by Bob Johnston, the album was released on October 24, 1966, in the United States by Columbia Records. Following the success of the re-release of their debut single "The Sound of Silence", Simon & Garfunkel regrouped after a time apart while Columbia issued their second album, a rushed collection titled Sounds of Silence. For their third album, the duo spent almost three months in the studio working on instrumentation and production.

Michele Carafa was a student of Cherubini and formed a lifelong friendship with Rossini based on mutual admiration. Carafa established a career in Paris through his association with the Opéra Comique, which is where he presented his masterpiece Masaniello. Uniquely, Carafa was a descendant of characters in his own opera, which was based on real revolutionary events that took place in Naples in the 17th century. The result is a well-paced historical drama, closer to French operatic models with limited reliance on bel canto and the influence of Rossini.

Far from being an insular figure, William Byrd was in touch with European, especially Italian musical currents. This programme presents England’s greatest Renaissance composer through an Italian prism, placing his keyboard works alongside Italian music he might have known, been influenced by, or influenced. Works by Claudio Veggio, Girolamo Frescobaldi, and dances from Italian and English sources shed light on Byrd’s fantasias, pavans, galliards and variation sets, works which display a striking mixture of learned counterpoint, harmonic daring, keyboard virtuosity and irrepressible dance energy. Performed on historic Italian instruments, the Venetian Renaissance organ in Valvasone and a harpsichord after Alessandro Trasuntino, Byrd’s music appears not as that of an isolated English master, but rather in lively dialogue with the wider European, especially Italian Renaissance.

The piano firm Erard dominated mid-nineteenth century Europe and France well into the twentieth century. All the composers featured in this disc owned Erard pianos and dealt regularly with the firm whose Director from the 1880s was Albert Blondel. Chausson is pictured with his family (he had five children) at his Paris apartment, 22 Boulevard de Courcelles, with his Erard 2.12 (7’) number 50621, manufactured in 1886.
