Edu Lobo

Born in Rio de Janeiro, son of composer Fernando Lobo, Edu debuted in music playing the accordion. He later got interested in guitar, against his father’s will. He started attending gigs at nightclubs in Copacabana, and put a group together with Dori Caymmi and Marcos Valle. In 1962, Lobo wrote his first song with Vinícius de Moraes, "Só Me Faz Bem". That same year, he recorded his first single, featuring classic bossa nova songs. Later on, he strayed a bit from that tendency, adopting a more active profile in popular culture, thanks to his association to Ruy Guerra, which generated songs like "Canção da Terra", "Reza" and "Aleluia". He wrote soundtracks for theater plays, and, in 1965, in São Paulo, Lobo launched one of his greatest hits ever, "Upa Neguinho", co-written with Gianfrancesco Guarnieri and recorded by Elis Regina. Edu competed in popular music festivals, being placed first in 1965 with "Arrastão" (with Vinícius de Moraes) and in 1967 with "Ponteio" (with Capinam). Between 1969 and 1971 he lived in the US, devoting his time to music studies. By that time, he worked with Sergio Mendes and Paul Desmond. Back in Brazil, he released solo albums and split albums with big artists, like "Edu e Tom", from 1981, with maestro Tom Jobim, and "O Grande Circo Místico", in 1983, which featured compositions by him and Chico Buarque. In the 90s, Lobo released new material and wrote movie soundtracks. His CD "Meia-Noite" (1995) was awarded Best Brazilian Music Record at that year’s Sharp Awards.
