Having spent most of the '50s refining the piano-bass-guitar format—a lineup pioneered by Art Tatum and made iconic by Nat King Cole —pianist Oscar Peterson began to disrupt this balance at the turn of the '60s. Seeking to shift the orchestral dynamics surrounding his piano, he formed a remarkably cohesive new trio, pairing his loyal partner of ten years, bassist Ray Brown, with the nuanced, rhythmic punctuation of the great Ed Thigpen on drums.

This group had already been seasoned by months of touring and a staggering number of projects for Verve under the direction of Norman Granz —including nearly a dozen records exploring the Great American Songbook. We find them here in a state of grace, captured in exceptional sound quality during a residency at Detroit’s Baker’s Keyboard Lounge in August 1960. Remarkably, this recording has remained unreleased until now.

Across a beautifully balanced repertoire that interweaves popular Broadway melodies and classics from the Great American Songbook (Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart) with more “modernist” jazz selections—including John Lewis’ “Django,” Charlie Parker’s “Confirmation,” and Benny Golson’s “Whisper Not” and “I Remember Clifford” —Peterson and his trio showcase a masterful "art of the trio."

Their approach is rooted in a classical aesthetic of clarity and balance, yet it is subtly subverted by a flair for digression and a level of virtuosic paraphrase that is simply staggering. Lyrical without sentimentality and sensitive without ever feeling forced or overly introspective, this music is light, "easy," and animated by a constant rhythmic joy. It is a performance that radiates eternal youth.
