The cover shows R. Kelly as a super-smooth soulman looking delighted at being parachuted onto an Andy Williams album sleeve. Suspicions that the Chicago singer isn’t taking this Christmas schtick too seriously are confirmed by “Mrs Santa Claus” in which he tries to cuckold the bearded guy by wooing his wife with double entendres and an absurdly strenuous exhibition of vocal acrobatics.
But the music largely resists gimmickry with a well-worked series of pastiches, from Stevie Wonder-influenced soul charmers (“I’m Sending You My Love for Christmas”) to classic R&B (“Christmas Lovin’”), sung with something approaching a straight face, even when employing the you’re-my-unwrapped-present metaphor for the umpteenth time.
