Alongside Paul Mauriat, Raymond Lefèvre and Franck Pourcel, Caravelli (real name: Claude Vasori) was one of France's most popular musical exports, his light orchestral albums selling in their millions around the world. But whereas the classical influence was more pronounced in the music of Mauriat and Lefèvre particularly, the Caravelli sound instead leaned in favour of Latin and jazz, a reflection of his great liking for those styles. This Vocalion's reissue features pair of Caravelli's album - Caravelli At San Remo (1967) and J'aime (1966).

Caravelli at San Remo:
Italy's San Remo Festival is one of the most exciting annual occasions in the popular music world today. 1967 marked the 17th anniversary of the festival that has been responsible for producing more evergreen popular songs than almost any other musical event. On this album, Caravelli has gathered together a selection of the best songs to have emerged from San Remo in recent years, including the 1967 winner Non pensare a me (Time Alone Will Tell). Also represented are the winners and finalists of earlier festivals, like the 1966 winner Dio, come ti ото (Oh, How Much I Love You), Le colline sono in fiore (The River), and what was for England probably the most identifiable San Remo hit, Volare. Happily, France exports still another cause for rejoicing - music in the unique Caravelli manner. The silken sounds of Caravelli's Enchanted Strings, with their lilting interpretations of today's worldwide hits, are currently the talk of Europe. Now, J'aime is the exciting album that introduces their smooth and subtly rhythmic music to England. A sparkling French version of Yesterday, by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, sets the style of the album - gently swinging, infused with Gallic charm and piquancy. Also performed in the refreshingly different Caravelli way is such savoury international fare as What's New Pussycat, J'aime, Long Live Love, Trains and Boats and Planes and Charles Aznavour's La Bohème.
